  1. Differentiate between the system, surroundings and universe.
    •  

    • System – This is what our focus is on.  It is typically the reaction occurring.
    •  

    • Surroundings – This is everything else that is not the system (reaction).
    •  

    • Universe = System + Surroundings

     

     

  2. Identify the system:


    The reaction NaCl(s)
    Na+(aq) + Cl(aq) is the system.
    The water that the reaction occurs in is part of the surroundings.

    We can therefore determine that the reaction is endothermic (absorbed heat) because the temperature of the solution decreased.
